Peter Drennan Stabilizer floats

Post by Wallyboy Rob »

Can anyone remember these floats? they came in 2bb, 3bb and 4bb sizes, they were an onion style float with the bulb in the middle of the stem, my favourite ever float having bagged me a 1lb 2oz Dace

they were made for close in Tench and Crucian fishing but I also found them exceedingly good for Dace fishing on the Itchen when the flow was slow fished top and bottom, a real hybrid Stillwater/river float, I think they were last made around 1980/81
going with the flow - You gotta luv them gonks

I recall them, but I never used them, though I do have a few Peter Drennan stable stick floats in my collection, they proved very successful.....

Sorry no photo, the last stabilizer I had was lost many many years ago, I wrote to Drennan to ask if they had any in stock or a dealer where I might get a set but they had been discontinued for quite a while, the lovely chaps at Drennan did however send me a set of the floats they brought in to replace the stabilizer gratis, the Peacock waggler, but alas this was a proper antenna float and was no good for slow trotting for my beloved Itchen Dace,

please excuse my crude sketch of a stabilizer, I am in no way as artistic as my good chum S.K

Ah, I had something like that once...the spring was a counterweight to cock them it seems. Sorry, not sure where they are now.
Easy enough to duplicate with a bit of lead solder at the bottom....or an olivette if you fancy a thin carbon stem.

Thank you for the offer chaps, I will attempt a couple for myself, I have some Balsa dowel left for the bulb and should be able to get hold of some reed for the stem

I've knocked a couple up but used cane skewer instead of reed, that should make them more sensitive.

the larger of the two is more like the original shape, the smaller I have made for a Crucian pond I am lucky enough to be able to fish
