The most important piece of tackle!

Post by The Tuesday Swim »

Hooks!

I'm doing a little bit of research at present for some new hooks in smaller sizes (my current supply is getting low). At present I'm very happy with Fox wide gaped barbless in larger sizes and Raptor hooks (although I do find you need to keep an eye on the points on the Raptors), any suggestion for some new brands to look into? Around the size12-18 range, eyed, and stronger enough for tench, barbel etc, maybe lighter gauge in the 16-18 range for roach and rudd.

Your thoughts gents...

You might look at the Korum S3 in size 18 for your larger hooks, they are more like a 14.

For your smaller hooks why not splash out on some Tubertini?

The tackle shop in which I worked last Summer drew in customers from miles around just for stocking these hooks...the matchmen love them.
Twice the price of other hooks, though! and funny sizes too......

Obviously hooks, like main line and hook lengths can be a very personal thing with many differences in opinion. Here are some that I get on with –
Drennan Super Specialist – general barbel/chub/tench
Drennan Super Spade for trotting for barbel and large chub
Drennan carp feeder – love these for float fishing for tench
Kamasan Animal
For Roach/Rudd - size 18 and smaller
Drennan team England super carbon maggot hooks
Kamasan B511
Preston pr25
Drennan carbon caster Blue
Mustad 90340

A bit expensive, but I've got a lot of faith in Guru QM1 hooks, which are more or less all I use now in sizes 12 -18. They're promoted as being "ideal for hair rigging" but I generally tie them with a Palomar knot.

I find the Kamasan Animal hooks very good in the smaller sizes.

The thing about the Tubertinis and the Guru QM1s is that they are both incredibly sharp. Though the QM1s can blunt quite quickly if fishing on the bottom.

There are a number of hooks 'made' for hair-rigging these days, it seems to be just a slightly larger eye to allow the line to pass through twice, which does mean you can do a 'double' Grinner Knot, if you so choose.

Hooks are personal, yes....I used nothing but Maver MT4s for years because I had been so lucky with them.

I've always only used Drennan Super Specialists hooks for my carp fishing. I've tried other things, for example a friend gave me these very expensive carp hooks to try that he swore by but they kept loosing their points. I kept going back to Drennan and I guess they might not be 'state of the art' hooks but neither is any of my other tackle…
