cleaning vintage floats

Can anyone advise how best to clean up old floats please - I've just picked up a few including harcorks. Some are in excellent condition, others are caked in dirt or have the odd chip. Is it OK to use white spirit - I'm not sure whether it could affect the varnish?

I plan to use them and am thinking of re-varnishing them as added protection but is that wise?

I've used 0000 wire wool to clean Harcorks before if there not too badly chipped, brings the colour back nicely and then revarnished to finish.
