What a fantastic pike!
I only caught them to around 8lb from the backwater but had this 9lb salmon in 1990 wobbling a sprat.



It got a mention in the angling times (they got the weight wrong though).

Nice pictures MrB, is that an Opinel knife in the photos? Are they any good? Was thinking of getting one...

Well a lot of water has run over the weir since the last time I fished it.
Got a few tricks up my sleave for next seasion.
Last time I fished it there was a big Carp in the clear shallow water... I was hoping for a Barbel but on reflection a big one could have folded my rod up like a stick of liqurice!
Any recomendations for a good split cane Barbel rod?

It depends on price.
The cheapest option is probably a cane carp rod like a Chapman's 550. Then a MKIV carp which will be more pricey.
Some people I know use cane salmon spinning rods such as Sharpes or a Hardy LRH 2.
Otherwise there are modern cane barbel rods such as Barder's Barbus Maximus or AJ Davis' Marauder Barbel Rod.
There are other makers and someone like Ryan Burns will make a one off rod to your specification.

That’s something to go on.
I was thinking of the MK 1V... There are a few around, but it’s the condition...The Chapmans 550 sounds good too.
I would rather an older rod and not one of the new ones even though they will probably be just as good if not better!

Ps... The salmon rods sound interesting too..

A lot of 'which barbel rod' goes with 'how big do they grow'.
