A redmire experience...

I'm reading Tony Miles, "The Carp Years" at present, and there's a gripping account concerning an apparently supernatural experience under the oaks at Redmire, back in 1987...
He was awakened by someone or something shaking his bivvy and bedchair -

"As I waited for the kettle to boil, something else suddenly struck me as being very odd. Inside my bivvy was like an ice box...Three times, when my eyes were closed, I was startled by what felt like an icy blast of air on my cheek...And then I noticed a large, threatening black shadow that continually crossed and re-crossed the open door of the bivvy. As it did so, the glow from my beta lights was blocked out, and I was now becoming very scared..."

Great stuff!

Haunting stuff for sure, and these are the stories that keep alive the magic and mystery. :thumb:

I so agree, SK - I love the fact that many carp pools seem to have a resident spectre or two!

Oh glorious! I remember retelling that exact same story whilst sharing a glass of wine in August 1997, at Redmire, in the Evening pitch to the gentlemen I was sharing the lake with for the week.

There was some very fitfull sleeping that particular evening........

I'm uncertain on the notion of cold or icy air being supernatural. Often when I fish I'm freezing cold and yet ten yards away somebody is in the sun and in a t-shirt. The same thing happens in the garden all the time and the same with frosts.

The story that I'd like to know more about is the floating green eyed demonic head that entered the bivvy of the Richardsons.

Well I heard this story from Ricky Richardson himself. He and son Hugo were pitched in the Evening Pitch( camping, not fishing) and he described "A green eyed demon" entering their tent. As he told the story to me, he still appeared troubled by the event. I believe an exorcism was carried out shortly after.
The same event, or one very similar is described in Tony Miles book 'The Carp Years'. The howls of fear were apparently so loud that Tony (in Stumps) and another angler (in The Willow Pitch) were both woken and ran to the Evening Pitch to find the two occupants cowering with fear in the back of their tent.
I myself have had two 'interesting' experiences at Redmire. One in Stumps and one in my first, and last night in The Evening Pitch.
I was also at the pool a couple of weeks back and my friend Tony also had an experience in Stumps involving a dark figure.
It does appear that Stumps and Evening Pitch are the pitches in which people encounter this strangeness. Bizarrely, Pitchfords, between the two, seems unaffected.

Interesting stuff. I have an interest in the paranormal. Always sceptical with an open mind. That was until the year before last when my family and I visited Goodrich castle. We were in the dungeon and my son was recording video on the IPad. When I walked outside and played the video, within the first couple of seconds, you hear a mans voice, in what should like an old English accent, say ether "caster" or "castell", then you hear a shuffle and then my son speaking. Very odd and I can not explain it. There was no one else in the room or any noise from out side?? Strange but true. We still have the EVP.

I've visited Goodrich myself, ExeAngler - and I wouldn't like to spend a night there. I have spent two nights at Redmire - and that was spooky at times, in November. I was in the Willow pitch and I was awakened by a woman's voice calling my first name - not in a sinister way at all, but full of concern, really; ...I was cold and wet, and I expect I had been dreaming...

All very interesting but sounds like prime examples of mild cases of narcolepsy. Sufferers of this sleep disorder can actually start dreaming several minutes before they fall asleep, and this can lead them to believing they have experienced all sorts of bizarre things. For example, when examined by sleep disorder experts it was determined that alien abduction correlates with narcolepsy. Moreover, if one suffers from this condition one can be primed to experience (dream) about ghosts etc. by having previously heard about such stories if one is in the same location. All one needs to spawn a good fishing ghost story is a tired narcoleptic angler in the dark besides an eerie pool. And after the telling, when another tired narcoleptic angler visits the pool, if he's heard the previous story there's a good chance he will experience something very similar! Sorry, it's all in the mind chaps! And how are sub-conscious mind projects these dreams into our conscious minds before we actually fall asleep is far more interesting!

Another sign of mild narcolepsy is the conscious mind waking up before ones body, and this can be quite terrifying. I have suffered from this some years ago, and although you know you are awake you cannot actually move at all; this is called Sleep paralysis and is one of the symptoms of narcolepsy.

Most sufferers don't actually know they have this sleep disorder, primarily because of the general mis-conception that sufferers fall asleep in an instance even whilst walking; some do but they have severe narcolepsy.

Anyways, if any of you chaps keep having these visions whilst night fishing I would suggest you trundle off to a sleep therapist and stop trying to scare the pants of the other night fishing folk!
