Home waxed hat

Post by JimmyR »

Thought i would just show what i am doing with cheapo hat i brought off of the bay, i thought it would hold the rain out a little it did not, today i thought i would try to waterproof it.
Anyway i brought some white tea lite candles and fired up my Trangia to melt them with, i used a bruch to use to cover the whole hat with the wax, then let it dry, i then used a hair dryer to allow it to melt and soak into the hat.
Not quite finished but nearly there.

Interesting, I wonder if the wax will crack when you put it on!! Nowadays waxed hats are coated with anything but candle wax; I think they use a special blend of waxy oil like used for Barbours. Sorry! But I'm sure it'll be waterproof!

I`ve never heard it done that way Jimmy, let us know how it goes. An old friend, who was in the army all his life, makes the stuff we use. Its made out of pure beeswax, turpentine, linseed oil...
