Dear TFF members,

Tomorow will be a sunny and hot day in southern Germany. As my experience during the last days showed, my arms and my neck are not made for too much sun
I know sun cream would be a possibility, but I don't like it very much.
I'm searching for a shirt with long sleeves made out of a light material. Anyone a suggestion?

I've been using shirts mage by Columbia similar to this design

They are cool and protect you from UV rays. They aren't cheap but mine have lasted for years.

Hya...over the years I've found the most comfortable material to be linen. I believe it's what people used to wear..before cotton and other less feeling materials came along. I only wear linen in summer to be honest..nothing comes close.

Spot on, Linen is a great conductor of heat so you keep cool and protected from the suns harmful rays.

Andi, suncream isn't an option, it's simply essential!
Like it or not, put it on!

But to be honest, I forget about suncream myself quite often. I hereby declare, that I won't go fishing without adequate sun protection anymore.

I would prefer the German summer to be cooler and less sunny though. I'd rather wear my Harris Tweed jacket all year long ...

And don't forget a lightweight brimmed hat and sunglasses. UV light is extremely bad for one's eyes, especially for fishermen because it reflects off water. However, a modicum of sunlight, especially in the morning, is essential for good health, so don't go over the top. When I cycle to work I don't bother with suncream or a hat, but I do wear sunglasses. I cycle for about 45 minutes there, and 45 minutes back, and reason that on sunny days I build up a degree of natural protection over short exposure without getting burnt. Short exposure increases melanin production which is to a degree nature's own sun block. You also get a boost of vitamin D. But if you know you're going to be exposed to bright sunlight without any shade when your skin is still fresh and pale then sun cream is advisable to prevent burning. However, a little exposure is a good thing! You wouldn't want rickets would you. Apparently, it's been on the increase in the UK because of over protective parents slapping on too much sun cream on their kids every summer's day, not realising the vitamin D connection.
