Grandad Snape

Post by Snape »

Here's Grandad Snape taken in 1955 at Rhossili bay in South Wales.
Quite the bass fisher and dapper dresser!
Note the jaunty cap, cravat, upturned collar, double breasted blazer (Welch regiment) with handkerchief, Oxford bags.... Need I say more?

Not angling, I know ... but another example of fine attire worn during a days sporting activity in the '50's.

My late father-in-law, the wonderfully named Evelyn Kindersley Pulliblank, piloting his Marwyn racing car in a hill climb in around 1950.

Perhaps tweeds, tie, and no helmet were de rigeur at the time ! I love the touch of the kerchief, perfectly placed, on both gentlemen.

Yes, but only the ( relatively ) wealthy lived like that. (I 'm refering to the photo of the gent in the racing car, not Snape's grandad.

True - knowing my luck I'd have been in hob nailed boots and down the pit or somesuch: its easy to forget the downsides of life for the majority in former eras!

Too true - and very, very few were wealthy - the upper class or the working class, virtually no 'middle' class

Actually ... the car was sold as a kit for self assembly based around a 500 cc motorcycle engine. It's remarkable what can be done for little money given talent, skill, and dedication ... like watermole+'s reel built for (he says, and I'm sure he's correct) about £35 worth of materials ... or my own "classic" racing bike built from breakers yard bits. But I digress ...

I still think the two gentlemen look wonderful.
