Cold weather Gear..

Post by The Sweetcorn Kid »

With chilly autumnal winds already here and frosts reported it'll soon be time to dig out those warmer clothes.

Do you have any favourites? Maybe a few tricks that might help to stay warmer on the banks this winter?

I have a Wychwood Solace suit, which is almost too warm on all but the coldest days:

All you need underneath is lightweight thermal top and bottoms (of which there are a huge choice). It's usually cheaper to get these from an outdoors store rather than go for angling brands.

Zippo handwarmer in each pocket, thermals, Barbour fingerless gloves, layers, plenty of hot drinks, hands clasped round warm pipe bowl....

and I'm still usually cold!

I bought one of those Russian-style hats with the furry flaps last winter.
I look a proper 'nana in it, but it doesn't half keep my head, ears and neck warm

I also like to ensure that my feet are always warm as it difficult to put them in your pockets for a rub. If not moving about too much it's SkeeTex moon boots - moving about then it's their field boots - tried and tested over many years from someone who used to suffer from cold feet in sub-zero conditions.

I got one last year as well - and I agree they are incredibly warm.

Coupled with high quality 'breathable' thermal underwear that avoids making you sweat, and thermal mountaineering socks you will never feel cold. The gloves that just leave the top half of your fingers exposed complete the package, as it doesn't really matter too much then what other items of clothing you choose.
