chapman 550 carp butt section

Post by BendSomeCane »

Dear all . I am in the market for a butt section for my chapman 550 carp. Unless there is someone out there that can repair it. I recently hooked a large fish and felt the female ferrule in the butt give way slightly... as a result it is now .... what i would term .... a bit buggered. !

any help would be grateful

You should change your forum name to BustSomeCane!

Are you sure you need a whole butt section? Surely you could repair your loose ferrule? I do think the chances of finding a new (used) section remote. :Hat:

hello paul, im sure it is a loose ferrule however my inexperience in taking things apart contrasts greatly with my ability to put them back together again properly. If anyone is able to guide me through such a task id happily have a go ....

it was a strange thing .. i hit a bit fish and the rod bent as it should then it just seemed to give way a little. I turned the butt section around and carried on and it seemed fine , however on replacing it back as it was the rod became totally unbalanced.

thank you

Are you saying the female ferrule part itself has given way or that the ferrule has come loose on or from the cane?

Hello beresford. I suppose the ferrule may have come away from the cane - thats my assumption. The handle at the ferrule still feels tight through the cork. there doesnt appear to be any play ?

Is this the 28in detachable handle butt section? If so it is 'alloy with an internal brass ferrule' according to Chapman. The male ferrule is on the 1st joint which is cane. The 500, 550 and 700 Dennis Pye all have the same feature.

I had a different rod that also used an alloy detachable butt which just "collapsed" under pressure.

Could the alloy have bent/moved under the pressure? Is it still straight or have a kink? None of these help by means of a cure but may identify the problem.

If required a new handle could be made - if the ferrule is OK or a new one acquired.

Just run my metal detector over the butts of a couple of my 550's and can confirm they are both metal under whole length of the cork .
