Can anyone tell me what and how 'Impregnated' is and does?

As I understand it, the cane is 'impregnated' during the building process so that it is waterproof without the need for varnishing.

It's phenolic resin. The cane soaks it up and it's bit like a plasticiser that seals the cane all whole way through. I understand the process was developed and used during the second world war when some aircraft parts were still made of wood.
