Re: A possible date for an early Speedia
In realty most probably a company which changed direction away from fishing tackle. Could have also moved ownership hence no records.
Sometimes the best way to find out is ask around local business in the area.

Re: A possible date for an early Speedia
A further date proof for the early full-production Speedia in 1951, this image appeared in a recent J B Walker catalogue sold on eBay.
This is the only image I have ever seen of a Speedia in any catalogue whatsoever!
Interesting to see that such a fine reel was offered at only £2.12s. 6d. or £2.65p in today's money.........
I put a bit about the Speedia on my blog here:

Nice find Nobby, that could be the catalogue that has the W R Products reel bands in it. Check the reel fittings page..

Sadly, it's just an image I lifted from eBay, Wal....I got outbid on the real thing :-(
J B Walker had to get their reel bands from somewhere though..........

Its all good news and bringing the mystery one step closer to being resolved.
Cant believe the price these reels are making getting obscene these days

Re: A possible date for an early Speedia
Well I certainly see them offered for high prices, but I don't know that anyone is buying.......
One antiques dealer in Norwich offers restored ones for £200 regularly, but I don't think he's had any buyers.
Of course if enough folk list them that high for long enough eventually someone will accept that really IS the price for one...only it won't be me...... :-)

Re: A possible date for an early Speedia
That's very true Nobby.
I would like to see them remain affordable its what speedia is all about to me. A good working reel at a price which does not require a cheque book and pen .

Re: A possible date for an early Speedia
I see there is a later style Speedia on eBay at the moment, the style with a small centreboss and three screws. These so often turn upo in boxes clearly marked MkII which is very confusing as the earlier pill style centreboss reels seem so often to have boxes marked MkIV.
The one currently on eBay clearly has MkIV written though, but the V is written at a funny old angle...maybe the writing was just a bit poor on most of them.......?
