I love using the wide drum Speedia.

I also have a Marco Cortesi which I don't use any more as it suffered terribly from the line getting trapped behind the spool (the gap around the rim is quite large).

I agree with those who say that almost anything will work fine close-in, so long as it's strong enough. I avoid knurled rims though - potentially nasty if a carp takes flight from the margins.

My first margin carp centrepin was a 4 inch Allckocks Aerialite in mottled maroon and black Bakelite. They're pretty much bullet proof, ambidextrous and you can pick one up for £15-£30.

I dunno. You could sharpen a few hook points on it until the fish tires.......

I always reckoned whomever first thought of knurled rims hadn't ever caught a carp in the margins.....

There is loads of reels that would do for that. You don't need something expensive for Stillwater margins work.
