Closed face reels

Post by OldTackle »

As here's already lots of specifications of many pins around I thought why not gain some valuable information about closed face reels as well. First interest is maybe due to gear ratio.

I guess the top list of reels for trotting is:

Reel gear ratio

ABU 501 1:?
ABU 503 1:?
ABU 505 1:3.25
ABU 506 1:4
ABU 506M 1:?
ABU 507 1:3.2 or 1:3.6 not sure
ABU 507 Plowman conversion (same as regular 507?) 1:?
ABU Diplomat 601M 1:4.1

Crack Contact 400 1:?

Daiwa 120M 1:4.1
Daiwa 125M 1:4.1

DAM CFS (the coffee grinder) 1:5.25

Ryobi CF 100 1:4.1

Stucki Oromatic 1:?

Let's get rid of these question marks and maybe add some more vintage reels famous for their trotting qualities.

One to add would be the Crack Contact 400; no use to me as there was no RHW version, but many of its users loved it to bits, I was told.

Thanks Vole, added to the list. Would be nice if someone could let us know the gear ratio of this one.

There is also a Daiwa 123m, there is no ratios printed on my reel I am afraid.

Just checked my 123M and it is fractionally over 1:4.

My 120M is fractionally over 1:4.

It looks like they could be the same as the 125M.. ie 1:4.1 :Hat:

I've a small collection of CF reels and have always wondered if Daiwa just stole the Abu design or if they were licensed to use/adapt it? I enjoy using my 120s and 123s and have a load of spares for them and 125s should members require

Olympic did one as well.

I had the Olympic one touch. Loved that reel.

Hmm..just recognized that the gear ratio of my 505 and 506 are NOT the same. My 506 has a ratio of about 1:4. Can someone please confirm that?

I have 2 506s that our parents bought for my brother and I in the early 1970s. My recollection is that they are actually 1:3.9 and the one I have to hand is certainly a fraction shy of 1:4. Sadly, the 503-508 manual I have doesn’t say.
