ABU MODEL NUMBERS

Post by SharkBoy »

Hi guys would i be correct in assuming that a cardinal 155 spool would fit a 55 reel - 157 would fit a 57 cardinal ? - i thought that maybe the 155/157 numbering was for the American market and 55/57 was the European maket range of reels ? can anyone confirm cheers

Yes the spools can be interchanged, from version to version 55 to 155. The 152/154/155/157 were the economy versions of the 52/54/55/57, from memory, as I kept the original and disposed of the "economy version", there are differences for example, differing handles , which cannot be interchanged, from 155 to 55. Also I seem to recall the 1** version handles were not ambidextrous, they only came with left hand wind and they have a simplified line lay, unlike the superior versions.....

The 152,154,155 and 157 carried silver print on their body and spools rather than the gold print of the 52, 54, 55 and 57's. This is the only difference you will see with the spools.

The side plates were plastic rather than metal and they came in left hand wind only (none ambidextrous). The shaft also oscillated up and down faster on this cheaper range although the retrieve was the same.

In use the only real difference I noticed was that the clutch on the cheaper range never sounded so sweet with it echoing in the plastic cavern rather than the nice metal side plates of the better known 52, 54, 55 and 57's. I used 155's and 55's as well as 57's over a period of many years.

I should have added, I still regularly use the 54`s and 55`s, they are still cracking reels and though they are bullet proof, the spares are still readily available. In operation, the only thing I recall is that I didn't like the line lay on the 154/155/157
