Abu 66 or 77 paired with Chapman 550

Post by MightyMaggot »

Have a Chapman 550 with green whipping, fancy pairing it with a nice green cardinal, which would suit the 66 or 77, use will be carp fishing on a small pond to mid doubles

I have to say you may find the 77 a little bit front heavy as the rotor is rather larger than the 66 one, if your looking for close to medium work then I think the 66 will be the better reel for you to fish with.
Be careful what you buy as these reels in a used condition can have bail issues, the bail will tick when you wind it and the plastic trips that wear are a hard and expensive bit to find. :Hat:
You could of course be like Chris Yeats and use a 44

Thank you for the advise, the 44 seems a little two small, just seen a picture of a 66 against a mitchell 300 and it looks the ideal size....Yes watched Chris Yates use the 44 in 'caught in time' did he not also use the Avon mk iv for big carp 😁

I have both 66s (tweaked by above member! Thanks) and 77s. As BL explains above the 66 is ideal. I have found the 77s better on rods more powerful than a 550 (1.5 t.c). The Dennis Pye or equivalent using 15lb or more b/s line for salmon.

They can both be used baitrunner style as the clutch is so good!

A 66x is also very good.
