Silver Bream

Post by MGs »

Whilst thinking about the hybrids post, I got to thinking about unusual fish. Silver bream sprang to mind. I know these have never been widespread. Even so, I have only ever seen one on the bank. It was caught by my fishing buddy on the Grand Union Canal in 1975 or 1976.
Are these still rare, or are there some waters holding reasonable numbers?

I seem to recall they are a litle like Crucian carp - only a few waters where the real articles exist. I know that, proportionally, they have larger eyes than bronze bream. Personally, I've never seen one. Does anyone have a picture?

A biggie indeed. Thank you, Snape. I'm not a fan of bream: but what a gorgeous looking fish.

My son caught what I think is a silver bream at the Royal Berkshire Fishery in lake 3, he actually had three out that day while after carp.

I'm inclined to think that is a juvenile common bream JT, but I may be wrong.
Common bream have the bigger hump and I think silver bream look more 'roachy'

JT, I'm with Snape on this one. The Silvers look more roach like, which is why they are often confused with hybrids

I suspected as much, hence the "I think" comment.
