From mole hills

Post by TrentFisher »

Saturday had arrived and knowing I would be busy on Sunday there was a window to grab an afternoon fishing for perch on the Trent very close to home.
I needed to get couple of things out the way in the morning.
On my very short walk with my terrior Fudge (cruciate op. for him on Thursday) I spotted some fresh molehills so collected a little to use as a carrier for my chopped worms.
Arriving at the river around 1 pm I chose my swim with little to no flow and willow branches protruding from the bank and dangling in the water.
The sun had broken through and remaining the leaves came alive as they danced in the light wind deflecting the rays from shadow to light.
With the chopped worms encased in the molehill soil plopped into the watery depths close to overhanging branches.
The Aspindale Avon was flick and line pulled from the Trudex run through the rings allowing the beautifully crafted Sussex Micky goose quill to land gently on the rivers surface.
A quick turn of the reel saw the red tip of the float appear and settle in the right spot......well that went well I thought.
The wind had increased slightly but no concern as I settled down in anticipation of the float disappearing.
Time was passing .
The sun had lowered .
The high pitch sound of the Kingfisher caught my attention as it whizzed by.
Landing on the lower branches in the next spot on my left.
The sun made it's orange glow.
I glance back at my float.
still there.
Did the tip dipped?
yes.
It proceeded to disappear.....yes
A split second later I strike expecting connection.
Nothing,my sigh took me by surprise was I really that shocked at missing that bite.....obviously I was!
The recent outings on the Trent had been somewhat .....unsuccessful fish wise.
A plop followed by a flash of orange and blue saw the Kingfisher move to my right with fish.
Talk about rubbing it in.
Hook re-baited and float back in position.
Another little dip,but no further development.
The light was changing and time was pressing on.
A few more chopped worms introduced .All looked good for the final act.
The river surface saw signs of fish movements .
My eyes were now fixed on my float.
It sank slowly but not yet out of sight .Then it did.
Strike ,resistance, the cane tip came to life as the young pretender made its bid for freedom.
As this small but extremely beautiful perch lay in hand asking to be released had no idea it had made my day that bit better.
And with that it was returned to its watery world.
There was still light so the next cast was made .
The float dipped under a few more times before the light had faded, resulting in a further seven perch being caught. No monsters .No matter.
The adventure was now in my memory.
I hope you all enjoyed your adventures this weekend.

All the best
Nige.
