Troydog wrote: Thu Aug 10, 2017 5:55 pm Welcome Perry - I loved my ABU Cardinal - the tension screw on the back was just so smooth and I never remember a tangle. But eventually it got old and not repairable (apparently). I wonder if it is still possible to buy these reels? I've still got all my Mitchells, including the baby, But the Cardinal was best.
Thank you Troydog,
Plenty of vintage Cardinals for sale on various websites, super reels still going strong today.

Hello again Perry. I've been thinking about that Cardinal. Trouble is I cant remember what model it was, just the reel was small, smaller that a Mitchell 300. I've not bought any kit online before. When you say plenty of websites with them on do you mean Amazon and ebay or are you talking about more specialist tackle sites please?
Best
Tim

Hello Troydog, ebay in particular has various Abu Cardinal models for sale on a regular basis,at the moment if you look on the vintage reels pages you will find models ranging from the smaller 333,444 and 33 to the mid range 3,4 and 44 and the larger 66 and 77.There are also a couple of the smaller model 40.Maybe if you see the photos it will jog your memory as to the model you had. There are many models i have not even mentioned, but i must warn you some of them are not cheap(if you are thinking of getting one)
There are some brilliantly informative posts dedicated to Abu reels on this Forum with many pictures in the Traditional reels section, especially by a member named BeechmereLake, who has fantastic knowledge of the subject and takes great pictures. If you would like any advice he is your man. regards Pel

Thanks a lot Pel - I had no idea that Cardinal reels have become so collectable. You are right about the prices though; I have only ever bought tackle to fish with rather than to collect. I think that mine was a 54. But for the time being I'm going to have to manage with a Drennan Series seven float reel......
Best for now,
Tim
