Saying Hello!

Post by Martin H » Sun May 20, 2018 9:15 pm

Hi fellow danglers, a little about myself,
60ish and been fishing since I was about 10yr old, grew up in the Colne valley, learning the craft on the River Colne, Frays(yes it used to hold fish), Grand Union along all its stretches accessible on my knackered old push bike, Cowley Lake, Little Britain, Farlows and various places I could get into without getting caught. Was taught to fish by my grand father on summer holidays in Kent.
Now in Yorkshire surrounded by whippets and many fine fisheries. I've never sold or thrown away any tackle, except occasionally to a youngster to help him start, so have a shed and attic full of mainly old dishevelled well used stuff.

On the cane front I have a Martin James 'greaves' which was picked up for a fiver from a car boot and refurbished to a decent standard by myself.
Also a Sealey Octofloat which cost the same and scrubbed up well.

However my pride and joy is an 11'6" 2 piece Avon split cane I built from blanks sourced from old stock in the UK. This was funded by money my Grand father left me, carefully built(20 years ago) and named 'Sid' in Indian ink in honour of the old chap.

Reels... On my first proper 'payday' in 1976 I blew the whole weeks money on a Mitchell Match.. still used today, spins wonderfully. Since then several Mitchells, a Youngs Trudex and Purist 2.

Dislikes(not mean't to cause offence, just an opinion). Litter, carp fisheries and all that goes with them, the demise of mixed fisheries, boilies, bait boats, and well anything fishing related post 1980 I guess.

I think we all have a responsibility to pass on the mystery, to youngsters, of the 'monster' fish in the deep weir pool, to ignite the romance that captured myself and my cohorts, whilst sat shivering all night by a silent dark canal eating jam sandwiches and drinking Tizer.

Regards,,, Martin.

Welcome Martin - pour yourself a cuppa and pull up a comfy chair ... you'll fit in nicely round here!

You're dead right about the sense of mystery - it's the fuel that keeps me fishing even today.

Cheers
Steve

A hearty welcome, Sir.
