I'd guess it's grease on the check wheel...the one on the back of the spool...greasing makes them fairly quiet. If it is weak spring pressure I'd be careful bending it to make it stiffer...the very first time I did this the spring broke very easily.


The hardness of the pawls and the spring tension varies enormously from reel to reel so reels can be very different to one another.



The simplest way to increase spring pressure is to whittle a little spring pre-tensioner:

This one was made in metal but it's quicker and lighter when made from a bit of BBQ skewer.

Please note in the first image the pawl is turned over as part of a conversion to left hand wind
