Rapidex II, Seldex II & Trudex II

Post by Duckett »

Can any tell me whether these are true 'pins of bearing ones?

Thanks in advance,

Phil :Hat:

Do you mean between those three reels or between a 'true pin' and a 'bearing pin'?

'true pin' and a 'bearing pin'

thanks
Thanks NR, well back in the days of the original Youngs reels (and all the other 'centrepins pre- about the 1970's) the spool rotated directly on the pin. There is a grub screw in the hub to adjust the end float of the spool.

I don't know which manufacturer first put ball bearings in the spools but in essence, that is the difference. In a bearing pin the spool incorporates normally two ball bearing races that rotate on the centre pin. Examples would be the J W Youngs John Wilson Heritage pin.

True pin reels rotate best when held horizontally because the spool is only resting on the grub screw touching the end of the pin, which offers little resistance. With the reel held vertical the spool is resting on the length of the pin, which offers slightly more resistance to the spools rotation. The exact opposite happens with the bearing type reel. The bearings are most efficient with the reel in the vertical position.

Other reels that have ball bearing races would be the Adcock Stanton and many of the modern mass-manufactured reels like the Okumas. There are some incredible modern engineers that create hand built true centre pin reels such as Garry Mills at Mill Tackle and for the pinnacle, look no further than here at the work of Watermole+.

I have never written about this before so I hope I have done this justice!

...... and then, just to confuse us even more, there are reels like the Homers Flick Em which have neither but instead rely on a bush (magnesium bronze?) to allow the ‘pin to rotate freely. These have a spool release holding the pin that looks like an old fashioned telephone. For me at least, these seem to work best in the vertical position.

Tengisol

Thank you and you explained it so well, even I understood.

I’ve a Speedia that spins more freely ( and wobblier ) than most, and
know that it’s a true pin.

I also have a J.W Purist II and a J.W BJ which spin as well but somehow ‘differently ‘and I know they both have bearings

I love them all and believe Garry whom I’ve spoken to many times about pins and things was responsible for their design.

My Mill Tackle pin if god spares me will perhaps be my retirement reel.

Best
Regards

Duckett

Thank you – and yes it does get confusing.

Like you I have quite a range from true pins such as an early rapidex, seldex, aerial and conquest, plus purists, Swallows and a new conquest - all on bearings. I enjoy all of them and took the latter out two nights ago for a spin.

Very light and much fun for chub, dace and this fella, a plump wild brownie from the Wensum.
