I'm surprised not seeing Rod on here, for there can't be many who regularly shared bank space with Maurice Ingham, Jack Hilton, Bill Quinlan and Chris Yates to name just a few. I guess with him moving tackle forward and modernising a lot of things it alienates him to many but Rod spent a lot of time at the places we all dream of - Woldale, Redmire and so on.

Here is a recent interview, sad to see these people growing older but nice that he is captured on film forever.

I apologise if some of you feel he doesn't belong here but to me he is an incredibly important part of our angling history and was fishing in a traditional way years before it was considered traditional

There was an interview with him in Angling Times this week.

I'm sure he would be very welcome on here - and I love reading about his adventures at Redmire with Chris Yates ( as described in some detail in CY's Four Seasons). I also have RH's book ' The Carp Strikes Back' - which I really liked.

However as this is the Traditional Fisherman Forum I can see why a large majority of todays anglers would choose not be on ths forum, as they may well feel that their entire modern approach to angling has no relevance on here, and that they would therefore have little to contribute, or even find little of interest.

That's a lovely interview Shaun, and yes, Rod has played a very important part in shaping carp fishing, especially through the seventies and through the particles era....

I enjoyed watching the video of his interview (I attached the link)I don't take the Angling Times any more so didn't see the interview. Not seen him for a couple of years and sad his knees are slowly giving up.

I spent a couple of findraising socials at Archer Lake (Lincoln) over the past couple of years and had a good time around Rod. Two summers ago we were sat around a fire until 2am singing Elvis songs while he played guitar and harmonica. It was quite a special moment. Roger and Kerry were also there, along with Mike Mintram and others....... (needless to say my Redmire Pool book got a few more signatures that weekend  )

Precious moments. I can sit and listen to the old tales all night long. I love the B.C.S.G. for this and usually turn in for the night at the A.G.M. parties as it turns light. I try and chat to someone different each year, really can't see the point in attending these socials then spending your time with the people you see all the time. Last year it was Dave Short who kept me entertained for hours with the obvious tales from Redmire and many other places. I wish there wasn't so much wine involved at some of these socials as many stories go forgotten about until someone says something that flicks the switch and the memory returns.

I can only say that "living in Wales and not reading the Angling press" I feel as though I've missed out on a good few things over the years, Judging by the way people are spoken about on here. I feel that eventhough I've spent many years fishing now I've still had a miss spent youth through not having fished with some of these people.

I really must read some of their books, they are spoken of with complete fondness and by reading of their accounts I'll perhaps understand why. I wish I could turn back the clock and visit some of the places where they've fished.

Rod Hutchinson is a legend amongst many.

A true legend and a great raconteur, his early articles and books were hungrily devoured by this young angler. Rod was the main man when it came to particle fishing and he and Chris Yates gave sweetcorn the big leg-up as a bait even though a few others were using it on the quiet.

Good shout Shaun, well deserved.
