Butt indicator

Post by MGs »

I have had a bit of rod building ephemera in my collection for a while now. it arrived with some agate rings purchased from a forum member. Until now I had no idea what it was. That is until I saw a listing on the Bay. The item is question is similar to this.

I had no idea until I saw the listing that the thing was threaded and actually the fitting for a butt indicator (swing tip style).

I have some questions:
1. Has anyone used one and if so, what is the bite indication like?
2. Is it normally fitted between the reel and butt ring or butt ring and next ring?
3. Does it have any significant impact on casting?

Thanks

MGs

It was in the box of agate lined rings I sent you. I bought a few of them over 40 years ago and fitted one to a rod I used for ledgering. The idea was to screw a swing tip to the rod at the butt rather than the rod tip. It seemed like a good idea. I whipped it to the rod below the butt ring. First cast the line snagged around it, broke with a 'pistol shot' and my lead went about 200 yards !

Not to be defeated, I moved the device between the butt and second ring. Same result.
That's why I gave it away ...... He he he :-)

Fair one. I think I'll give it a miss on that basis. May be worth a try for close range, but theoretically it looked like a poor idea for casting

Should it have been fitted like a sidewinder? But with a tip ring on the quiver tip which allowed you to fit the line through after you had cast as normal?

I think they had either a pigtail spiral eye or possibly a ring like a necklace clip?
I'm sure there was something similar on here a little while ago.

i had one on a vortex rod i had and i used a short swing tip on it the total length of it was about 6-8 inches it worked best when cast under arm but even then could be a bit tricky

Strange, the rod I fixed it to was a Vortex ! The line snagged it even without a swing tip fixed ! I still have the rod but it's never been used since modified it. A solution looking for a problem, best forgotten.
