So in general the fixed paternoster seems to be the better of the two.

Your in good company with that, John Wilson is an advocate of the paternoster. And I find he is usually right LOL

Not so sure, in my opinion fixed leads are never a good idea, there is always the potential to leave a fish trailing a lead

I agree Paul if you are talking 3oz or so but a couple of swan shouldn't worsen the situation but in any case my link to a float stop will allow the weights to pull free with minimal pull.

I only use SSG or LG on a sliding link or paternoster.

A good reason for using plasticine as it will just pull off.

Not sure about this if unfortunately the Line snaps for whatever reason the fish will have a hook in it with a length of line attached .
Taking into account for the fish to survive with a long length of line it would have to get rid of the hook with or without a a shot attached .
I would like to think the majority do. I have caught many fish over the years with a hook left in from a previous occasion. But never one with yards of Line attached. I don't know perhaps the line was abraded away I hope so . I have never pulled a broken line in with a dead fish on the end

I use plasticine also. Grey and brown are both good.
