New paint on a few Mitchell's
All the reels had bad paintwork but were mechanically good.
All have been stripped, cleaned, checked and serviced.
The green one is a 408 and the black and bronze is a 410.
The UK Special is a 300 and is my copy of the Garcia Mitchell 300 - 1976 Bicentennial Reel.
The dark blue and silver an early 300 shape with no name .

Your early 300 is indeed very early....one of the few early fourth versions with no reinforcement around the lubrication port screw. I think that makes it 1952 from memory?

Is the serial number still visible Lee?

That would appear to indicate it is a very early full bail indeed, LeeLjm183 wrote:Nobby The Serial Number on the reel foot is "A03300"Nobby wrote:Your early 300 is indeed very early....one of the few early fourth versions with no reinforcement around the lubrication port screw. If you look here at reel serial number B29598 you will see a couple of things highlighted with red arrows.
Wallace seems to be saying that these identify the super-rare first half bails on third version reels supplied only to dealers.
I'm not sure that your A prefix necessarily means an earlier reel, but it's certainly an early one. I have a similar reel, but it doesn't have those features picked out with the red arrows and has a later non-prefix serial number.
I'd imagine it has some nice gears inside with three steel pegs for teeth on the pivot gear......I wonder if it has an aluminium or a brass gear on the rotor head? This is one of the features not mentioned on the Mitchell Museum site and I don't actually know when the move to a brass gear came about.
Regardless of the serial number prefix letter that's a very low serial number indeed and surely indicates a very early reel? Wallace seems to be saying these reels are 'extremely rare'.

Re: New paint on a few Mitchell,s
Hello Nobby .
My reel doesn't have the highlighted points either and it may have had a different rotor fitted , mine has a later baffle plate as in serial No 472839 on the Mitchell site.
It does have the three steel pins on the pivot gear, the rotor head gear is brass.
Still it,s a nice reel and a lot smoother than later reel,s.

Re: New paint on a few Mitchell,s
I suppose the whole reel might have been rebuilt to a more modern specification at some time. Yes those early gears are works of art, with a few 'improvements'...if that doesn't sound arrogant....these early reels are always the very best after a fettling.
