Re: Making an Aerial-Match
All are exquisite little components. I particularly like the spindles and cups for the handle knobs...the little radius on the cups looks spot on.

Re: Making an Aerial-Match
Getting a handle on the matter..
Following on from last time, I managed to turn 14 winders from the authentic, black Ebonite, kindly sent to me by 'Dokterhoo' also made a few from buffalo horn and some other materials, just to see the effect, though I doubt whether these alternative ones will be used.
The pictures don't really show up the true colours as the afternoon light was very bright when I took them, but good enough to give you some idea..
Here are some of the handle winders, finish turned, polished and ready for fitting. The exact shape, size and radii have been faithfully copied from an original 1939 reel, courtesy of 'Fredline'.
Here, they are temporarily assembled onto their spindles..
..and this is roughly what they will look like on a finished reel.
The first one is from the tip of buffalo horn. This is the densest part of the horn and when first cut, quite pale in colour. It is only after a long time has passed and they have absorbed old oil and dirt, that they turn that lovely, dark colour. It can be falsely coloured with dye, but this is entirely natural..
This is from the same horn, but taken from lower down.
This is natural cow horn tip..
Some experiments with pen making blank acrylics..
St.Elmo's Fire..
This material was made specifically for Conway Stewart fountain pens and is no longer available. I have enough for three more handle sets and that will be it..
Last but not least, this is the genuine article. Vintage black Ebonite..
The possibilities are endless, but there seems to be nothing that beats the original simplicity of black!
...Next task? -Making the line guards!
Stay tuned,

Beautiful work Leszek
They're all lovely, but if I had to choose... it would be black.

Absolutely beautiful, all of them!
