given the diameter of that reel, it would make sense to run the line "over the top" to eliminate that angle/resistance as it comes off the bottom of the reel... all my pins are rigged thus.... there is also the added bonus of the line not wrapping round the reel foot... but then it's a method that suits me and not everyone else.... :Hat:

I found this really interesting Phil, like you I had wondered how these reels would perform. The reason that I wanted a bigger size drum on my reel was to improve the line retrieve rate. There are other factors involved in an ideal reel especially to use for trotting, but the Robo certainly ticks some of the boxes!

Hi there, I am in fact using/ fishing these kind of reels (although not the RoBo), these are as already mentioned by Chris (OldTackle) and Martin (Duebel) reels for fishing for Whitefish (Coregonus with all the different sub species - mainly in Switzerland, the south of Germany and Austria - in deep, cold, highly oxygen lakes - you catch them from around 3m in early spring to 30 m depth in late summer) - as alredy described there is a so called paternoster rig
( 3 to 5 nymphs - hooksize mainly 12 to 16, rarely 10, even rarer 18 - all dependig on the season and the water you fish them for) - idealy you fish for them from a boat, you do not cast out (!!!) but let the rig with a small lead (3 to 10 gr) very slowly sink to the bottom and then you lift very, very slowly, let it sink, lift ... and find out where the big shoals of the Coregoni feed. So these reels are called "Laufrollen".
You find costum made reels from specialists in Switzerland and Austria - you have them from DAM, Balzer ... and the more expensive ones from Stucki (CH), Websta (A) ... Some fish them with "line on top" (mainly because of the wind) but the majority the other way 'round. They do fine with Coregoni (in German you have different names like Renke, Reinanke, Felchen, Maräne ...) up to 55 cm (5 - 7 lb), but it happens that a pike or a big lake trout takes the whitefish - very, very hard to handle. The rods are from 6' to 9' with an extremly sensitiv quivertip, so you see and feel the fish more or less at the same time.
Part 2: as also already mentioned there is the so called "Wenderolle" - like the "Laufrolle" but you have a joint/pivot and you turn the reel in relation to the reelfoot - and you cast (!!!) - this is a methode developed in Ch to fish for grayling in rivers (either with a float or with quite a ledger) - almost all of them swiss made (quite fun to do it) - here you have to have "the line on top", for casting reasons. Heavier floatrods from 12' to 15' are required.

All right - that's it for the moment

Yours Christian

PS: I'd like to add - for the fishing from the boat you can use a light SC fly rod blank (#3 or #4) works great, as always you get strange looks from the other fishermen, for fishing the river I use a wonderful B&W Trotter and / or a very early Stucki Summa in 13' (Swiss made) and I'M looking for my Marco Medway 12' SC (coming in April)

There was briefly a copy-cat reel about called the Zen Master a couple of years ago and there are still some old stocks kicking about going quite cheaply even today.
One was listed, as by an unknown maker, on eBay last month and it attracted bids up to around £20 I recall.

They are on Amazon for £14.

I would really klike to see some pictures of this fishing approach, the fish themselves and particularly the various reels you mention, if you have any? Thanks in anticipation.

At least DAM had a species and method in mind. What on earth were TJ Harrington thinking?

A full 14 inches of line retrieved with each turn of the spool............no one has ever measured the line capacity with the cork arbour removed, but presumably it was measured in miles.....?
Looks to me like a lot of those holes, indeed I suspect all of them other than those in the outer ring (and maybe those as well) were put in by one of those drill fiends whose (usually pointless) handiwork we occasionally see round here.

Perhaps the DAM reel would be better named 'The Jimi' or 'The Prince'.

What is your favourite word?
I suspect it could be “love”, despite its drawbacks in the rhyming department.

  CRIKEY............. I thought it was off of a bicycle lol
Not a fish was visible that first time I visited Beechmere; an utter
stillness brooded over the place and I felt the strange and sinister atmosphere which, so the story goes,
has been the cause of several suicides.’
