Early Boxed Intrepid 3 1/2in Fly Reel (later known as Rimfly)

Post by AshbyCut »

Yes ... I know ... I can't resist temptation !!! ... But ...

This is a very clean early example of an Intrepid reel which was later to be named as the "Rimfly" because of it's 'rim control' facility. As the box shows, in it's earliest form it was known by the catchy title of "K. P. Morritt's Intrepid 3 1/2" Fly Reel (lightweight Fly Reel with Rim Control") !!!

To find one with such a clean box, and with so little paint loss, meant it seemed the perfect reel to sit on my Precision fly rods (when I ever learn to fluff chuck !).

Nice Mal, nice! Now get fluff-chucking but be warned, it is addictive.... :Hat:

Excellent, I have one just the same but in a later box. However, mine is listed as a 3 1/4" Lightweight.

It is often overlooked that fly reels were probably Intrepid/Morritt's biggest success story. Manufacture of these continued after the company closed down.

Yes – they must have sold tens of thousands of Rimflys. When I started fly fishing 40 years ago it seemed as if everyone had Rimflys except for the odd lucky chap who had Hardy reels.
