I purchased a group of 4 reels from a photograph that showed amongst others what looked like an Aerial type reel.
There was only a photograph of the front of the 4 reels.
The parcel arrived yesterday and the reel which I had primary interest is shown here.
There are no identifying marks or names on the reel, but scratched onto the brass foot of the reel is the date 15 8 95
It is a beautifully engineered reel, its diameter is 3 1/2"" and it is a wide drum of approx 1 1/4".
A friend suggested that it looked like a Richard Carter prototype and when i compare it to my Richard Carter Dragonfly it has similarities, especially in the the way the foot fits into the reels backplate. The comparisons are shown at the end of the photographs.
The reel is a gem and spins beautifully, and I am very pleased to have it.
I wonder if any fellow TFF members can shed some light on this reel?
Best regards
Mem

Re: Centerpin Identification
The date on the foot gives rise to it possibly from a Specialist Angling maker. There are a variety of different models which can be seen at:-

A couple sold on that well known auction site but called "centrepin reel youngs" in early September!
Almost identical\l to the following:-
A custom made Aerial style centrepin of the type retailed by Specialist Tackle
3 3/4" diameter, 1 1/16" width drum between the flanges.
A stunning hand made 3 3/4" diameter custom Aerial of the type retailed by Specialist Tackle in near mint condition. It can only have had little or no use. Just a couple of tiny marks to the anodisation. Very similar in appearance to the C815 Allcock Aerial. Wide drum of 1 1/16" width between the spool flanges. No maker's initials, but scratched on the underside of the reel seat is the manufacture date "25 6 95". Unusually, this is a true centrepin, most of this type run on bearings. The reel spins beautifully, absolutely true, and there is no wear to the spindle/bush. This is the only example I've seen with a gorgeous brass ratchet button. The ratchet and drag tensioner are both working correctly. Rare opportunity and great value at £195 UK posted.
I have a 'chrome'/silver version made by Tom Kelsey.

Re: Centerpin Identification
Thats interesting Olly, it looks almost identical. I thought mine was a C815 Allcock Aerial when I saw it in the original photo.

Re: Centerpin Identification
I reckon it is an amateur reel maker copy of a C815.and very good too
Re: Centerpin Identification
Take a fiver for it? seriously though that's a lovely looking reel, surely not amateur built in my opinion.

Terry Daniels
To name two!
And more - but tracing them seems to be difficult!
Whether they used the same machinery and in the same place? They all (???) seem to have come from Essex (??).
There is a hint(??) of who made a couple - those recently sold in that well known auction site - but I am not convinced although this was written:-
""Brand new centerpin One of two , see my other items for sale . Made by the ex foreman of youngs who apparently made 10 pins before he passed away. ""
