Starter reel

Post by Cane »

I picked up this little reel recently. It was rusty and in need of some tlc. The name was not visible, but turned out to be Grice & Young. Very basic, but I look forward to giving it a spin.

Interesting. Not seen that one before.

Cute little reel ,which was made when Christchurch was still in Hamphire !
In order to shoot some close-ups, wildlife photographer ,the late Len Scapstillon, lured the orca to him by dressing as a seal.......

"""There is a short coda here to the Grice & Young story, a reel acquired shortly after I had written the above. This tiny, 2" aluminium reel bears a Grice & Young mark. It is very simple, but robust, has no check and may just be the earliest reel to be produced by the firm."""

Thanks Olly. Just goes to show that it’s always worth having a second look at that rust covered object at the bottom of the junk box!

I think these boy’s reels are possibly another collecting area that has been neglected for too long.

“..... simple but robust .....” sums up the appeal of G&Y somehow!

I wouldn't think it was a boys reel - more a brook fly reel! Made about the year I was born.

Boys reels were very simple affairs - plastic, wooden or something like it!

I stand corrected Olly. I’ve just looked at the Australian link in your earlier post and noted the 1947 advertisement there mentions the “Junia I, II, III & IV. These are missing from the 1950’s and later ads, so might these have included this reel?

Just for interest, I’ve attached a photo of the line that was attached to this reel.

I may be wrong as looking on the very last advert/price list of 1952 - they show "Junior" reels - junior in size or usage?
