Net Handle Repair

Having recently purchased a vintage bamboo net handle with a wonderful patina (c1900) which had suffered the rigours of time, not to mention the luddite who must have stood on it at some point, a repair was in order. So off to the hardware shop for supplies on Expanding Foam, Wood Glue and Cable Ties and the action plan is under way. Using thin slithers of lollipop stick to open up the crack allows the glue to cover both surfaces, after which you can lash the handle with cable ties, this will assist the gluing procedure and stop the expanding foam on the next stage from blowing the fissure open again, although some seepage will occur.
In order for the expanding foam to do its job the screw end plug inside of the handle was drilled, allowing any build up of air pressure to escape from within the handle. After the expanding foam has been injection an oil threaded butt button can be screwed into place to save the internal thread from being fouled by the foam.
Once the foam has set the handle end can then be cleaned with a sharp knife for scalpel and if wished a brass end cap can be fitted, the longer you leave the cable ties in place before a final clean and polish with Danish Oil or similar product the better. The end result is a wonderful vintage landing net handle brought back from the grave. I once used a similar procedure on an Aspindale hollow built spit cane rod where the butt section had blown its seams as a previous owners had twisted the bottom joint when dismantling the sections.
