Planing Forms - Suppliers?

Post by Parabolic » Fri May 24, 2019 12:10 pm

Could anyone please recommend a supplier of planing forms for bamboo rod making? This would include roughing and finishing forms.

I'm looking to try and make fly rods initially, who knows where thereafter if I manage to master it!

I'm based in the UK.

Many thanks

Parabolic, I initially bought a form from a british supplier but I cannot recommend these. The finish is just not good. If you want more info about this please pm.
I now have a Swearingen form:

These are superb and the price is ok and Larry is a real gentleman and very easy to deal with. But there will be a considerable cost for shipping to UK. They are very well packaged for shipping in a wooden box.
Another option is Z&W fishing in France.

I have no idea of quality, never saw one of their forms.
Or build your own. There are several tutorials on the internet.
Good luck, if you need more ino please let me know.

PS:
a roughing form is not really necessary. You can use the butt side of your planing form for roughing. But if you want one it can be easily made from hard wood on a table saw. I can send you the drawings if you need them. Also a lot of info on www

Has anyone on here tried the planing forms from Z&W fishing in France?

If so could you give me a review/comments?

Many thanks

Hi build your own I did, it was not difficult and only a few tools needed. I chose the Thomas Penrose route > https://www.thomaspenrose.com the most expensive item will be the steel which could cost £100.00 or there bouts lucky I got mine cheap. If you are not rich you can buy what you need as and when you need it. I built a hot air tempering oven for about £40.00 not really needed but I think it will make life easier.

I got a quote from an E bay engineering company up north to have the steel machined flat to an accuracy of 0.001 " and that was going to cost £70.00, rather than pay, I draw filed it as per Thomas penrose's instructions it took me a good 15 hours spread over three or four days. I then used an oil stone to even everything out and believe it or not using the tools I have got I managed to get it to 0.002 in flatness. I agree making it in wood may be a better and cheaper way to do it. I am still making things for the project and I am not far off my first rod, oh by the way Tonkin cane prices are good ...

Regards Trefor
