Prep' prior to varnish touch up?

Post by Cat » Wed Mar 25, 2020 11:52 am

Hi All,
With all this time available I'm going to touch up my cane rods with a spot of varnish. What's the recommended way to clean / degrease original varnish (without removing any) prior to a light couple of coats, particularly over the whippings? Obviously, although the varnish seems mostly fine, I don't want anything untoward to ingress.
Stay safe.
Thanks Cat

A very good idea. The current weather will help the varnish dry, I'm sure. I have this morning applied another coat to some chubber type floats I made.

To purely clean a rod before varnishing I use kitchen paper soaked in mentholated spirits. Rubbing over with fine wire wool, as suggested by Reel Maker, will help the new varnish stick.

After using wire wool I normally go over the rod surface with a magnet inside the finger of a rubber glove to pick up any missed fibres.Image

Now that’s a great idea!
