Milwards Steeltip restoration

Post by Coral Maestro »

I eventually got round to carrying out the restoration of the Milwards Steeltip. This was a bit of a challenge as the whole blank is painted grey so I had to try and track down a suitable paint with a good colour match (which was even more tricky as the old varnish had discoloured). Here are some pics of the rod as it was (there are more pics in the "Milwards" section under "Traditional Rods").

After stripping off the old varnish and paint:

The steel tip insert was in fair condition with only some light rust:

Started cleaning the brass fittings in preparation for using "Brass Black"

Hung up in barn with brassware masked off prior to spraying with acrylic paint:

Started whipping on rings and intermediates:

Using "Auger" whipping thread:

End result. Just needs a couple more coats of varnish:

The dace is both lively and lean,
With a beautiful silvery sheen;
He'll snatch at your flies
With a lightning-like rise
And unless you are sharp, he's just been.

Superb finish. It's nice to see something different and to see all stages of preparation, execution and final result. Love it.

Thanks for the comments. Now I ought to take it out and use it!
