Ring whipping contraption

Post by Steve B » Sat Nov 18, 2017 3:34 pm

Afternoon all,

I am about to embark on building the above....I have purchased an old sewing machine motor and foot pedal, and will be making the rod supports from notched timber. What I would like some advise with is the business end...spindle, pully wheel and chuck if anyone has gone down the same road.

Thanks

Steve

I just use my hands! Whipping contraptions are really not necessary unless one plans to do it on a commercial basis.

Hi Steve - I'd also say it's not worth it for amateur rod makers, however... you might find it useful for turning cork handles instead of a lathe though.

A hand turned whipping cradle/jig like the Batson or PacBay wrapping stations are much more useful when working with fine silk and hex rods.

Cheers

Hi Steve- I to do all of my whipping by hand.
But here are some picks of a very simple rod rapper, easy to make and they work really well.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the pics and the thread link....I guess my obsession with mechanical stems from reading primarily American books on fly rod building, thats why initially I wanted to find someone local..ish to me building rods to take me through their methods and setup to start me off on the right foot.
Thanks to you guys and some very helpful PMs I am slowly beginning to get to grips with whats required.

Cheers

Steve B
