ferrules don't fit proper...

Post by Trilob » Sat May 05, 2018 11:36 am

Hello Gents,

I have some troubles with the ferrules on my Sabina. They are extremely tight and don't properly fit. Can only slide the parts for less then a centimeter over each other. Last time I even pulled one ferrule of the cane. that's reglued now and I have cleaned everything but that did'nt help. Now I'm thinking about sanding down the inner ferrule. But before me ruining the whole thing. Is there a better way?

I'm sure there is already a lot of info about this on the board. So if anyone knows please point me in that direction.

thanks!

Rub the inside of the female and outside of the male joints with a little bit of brasso. Rub well using a cloth. Clean off and then test the joint. Repeat until you get a better fit.

Before any use of abrasive I would give them a good clean with lighter fluid and cotton buds, may be worth examining them with a magnifying glass to check for tiny burrs. :Hat:

If these are the original ferrules, then they would had fitted properly. Therefore, it could be dirt, burrs. It could also be that one or other of the ferrules has become misshapen. I've had this happen and it needed a lot of gentle work to get the female back to being perfectly round. You may be able to tell by examining the male to see any marks left by contact.
If these ferrules are new old stock, then you may have to lap them in. Unlike modern replacements, which fit perfectly from the off, although, they come as a pair, they won't fit perfectly. Some work with gentle abrasive will be needed to get a good fit.

Thanks guys. I have cleaned them over and over until they fit again.
I even used the dremel tool to polish the inside of the female ferrule. but eventually they fit again.
Still a bit to tight for my taste but at least i can use the rod again.
