Removing verdegris?

I would like to remove the deeply ingrained verdigris from the reel fittings of a couple of rods I have recently acquired.

I don't want to use emery cloth or Brasso, except as a last resort.

Any tried and tested methods which are more gentle than those drastic and unsightly measures, please?

Drop them in Coke, lemon juice or vinegar for half an hour or so then give them a good rinse. That should do the trick..

Wal.

The Coke trick reminds me of the way my Middle School science teacher put me off that drink to this very day. At the start of one lesson, she gave us all a pig's tooth (from the local butcher I assume!) and a small glass dish which she poured some Coca Cola into. She then instructed us the drop our tooth into the liquid. There they remined on our desks for a week.

When we removed the teeth, they had turned to chalk and collapsed! Sadly, it failed to put me off other sugary drinks, just Coca Cola!

Not tried any yet, been too busy refurbishing an old "Ace"rod with new rings.
At last got the hang of doing fine intermediate whippings after a few tips from our friend Adrian. :Hat:

The fittings with the verdigris are on on old Millwards rod.
I can't remove them without damaging the cork, so I shall be proceding cautiously with all the above suggestions!

Might I suggest that you wrap the cork handle with clingfilm to prevent any discolouration / degredation before you attempt any cleaning of the reel bands . These can be moved over the clingfilm and jobs a good 'un ..

Very good idea CWK - clingfilm - as long as it doesn't need a trip to "Lakeland". Cannot go to Nottingham with my wife - without her insisting that we call in to see this shop.
