Somewhere I also have a version which runs at 90 Degrees to the rod blank. I assume its for setting up "sidewinder" style.
I walked across an empty land
I knew the pathway like the back of my hand
I felt the earth beneath my feet
Sat by the river and it made me complete.

Can also be used for a swingtip.

Swing tips can be used as butt indicators

It is definitely for a butt indicator, we used to use them a lot years ago. I wouldn't recommend placing it between the but and the first ring as you will tend to get a lot of tangles with the indicator doubling back, we always placed the connector between the first and second rings and we rarely had any problems.
