I have one of these 'traditional' fishing baskets that is now over 50 years old and whilst intact is somewhat dried and neglected. Can any of you suggest how I might best approach restoring it?

I have one like that. I rehydrated it by spraying with water and scrubbing with washing up liquid, rinsed that off with a spray, let it dry out then painted it with standard linseed oil (two coats!). Then the wife stole it to keep stuff in at her allotment shed.

You can also use Ronseal or similar, either neutral or to stain to a darker colour if it's bleached over time.

Thanks. I didn't want to ruin it but your comments are what I was thinking. Did you use raw linseed oil or boiled?
My wife too wants to steal it!

You could also use: Danish Oil, Teak Oil or Hard Wax Oil. But Boiled Linseed is the trad finish.

Barbelseeker I have just acquired a basket which appears to be identical to those made by your father.I will give it a good soak in water and a coat of danish oil when it's dried out.It may be for sale as I have already got a very useable one.I will bring to the TFF Day at Ravenfield to see if anybody is interested in buying it.The price will be £30.It looks to be in first class condition.

Thanks for the information. I did think about Danish Oil so I might try that since we already have some.
