Just wondered , does anybody else apart from miself still use the traditional cotton maggot bag ?

My last truly vintage one , about circa 1970 wore out years ago, I have had several since then, home made and working well.

I almost had a turn this morning, packing kit for a week on the Wye and couldnt find my present one anywhere, eventually traced to the reel drawer in use as a temporary bag for a nice little Intrepid reel and spare spools ( thanks Pallenpool, )

The maggot bag is a useful piece of kit for use when wading /trotting, these days it is more common to see anglers with a table set in midstream, laid out with 16 different baits plus a few tons of aluminium work attached as well.

Every time I go trotting I promise myself I'll get one then promptly forget!
If wasn't such a bad seamstress id make one, can they be bought?

As far as I know .... no !

They are easy to make if you have a sewing machine and some cloth and a bit of binding tape for a cord .
I asked for one in a tackle shop years ago and the spotty “ yoof “ who was serving just looked blank .
May be a chance for a cottage industry there maybe ?

Yes I allows have two in my rucksack , years ago everyone had them in the north east.
I make my own from denim essential piece of kit.

I use a bait apron which can also carry a few odds and ends of terminal tackle.

Hi Mark, I used to have a bait apron but daft as I am , I used to sit down when wearing it occasionally, the apron would lie on my lap and the maggots would wriggle out all over the place. My maggot bags just hang to one side , the wriggly critters never manage to ascend the creases and stay in the bottom.
