Matching rods and reels

Post by Tony1964 »

How do you go about matching your rods and reels?

One of my pins is 4.75" diameter and looks rather huge when I use it on my Martin James cane float rod. I have tried it in different positions on the handle so that it feels balanced but it made me think about using the right reel with my rods. When I use a fixed spool reel I consider the diameter of the butt ring on the rod as this will assist line flow and casting. Is this so important when using pins?

All advice greatly appreciated

Easy! If it "looks and feels right" - it is! If it "looks and feels wrong" - it is!

It's my understanding that the anglers on the Trent used to use a large pin for the fast retrieval rate when match fishing. It may not look too pleasing if your used to a tiddler....see my avatar...but if it works it works.

I would agree with that. Having used my Strikeright and Marco Cortesi pins the other day, the difference in retrieval rate is huge
