Why the long handles ?

I have a number of old cane Pike rods, one is 10ft long with 32inch cork handle ?

Was this just the fashion or was there some reason for the very long cork handle ?

Copied from the MK IV carp rod's design, I would guess?

I'm fairly sure Allcocks put a ridiculous 32" handle on their 10' Carp Superb. 24" – 26" on a ten foot rod feels perfect to me.
