I'm pretty certain that this was in his book "Fishing for Beginners". Does this ring a bell?Peter Wilde wrote: Some of MW's attitudes jarred on me - especially where I recall he said "I would rather lose half of all the fish I hook than have the fearful bother of carrying a landing net". Or something very like that - I disposed of the book many years ago, so can't check.
Apologies if this is in any sense a false memory - don't think it is, but can't be sure!
He recommended the use of a cotton glove, which he kept in his shirt pocket, to land the fish. The glove was pulled on by using his teeth.
And if the angler felt that he was about to be broken by a fish, he recommended throwing the rod in!
The idea being that the fish would be tired out by towing it around, and anyway it was high odds that you'd be able to retrieve the rod afterwards.
Not odds I'd fancy myself!
