Cow Paste?

Post by Mc. »

I've had some great catches of Crucians with sweet corn on my local pond, but I'm looking for more bait options. Maggots and luncheon meat don't stand a chance up against the hordes of tiny perch.

I've heard Cow Paste mention be for but have no idea how its made or what it comprises of?

What baits have worked for you when targeting these tricky little blighters?

Sweetcorn is my favourite, but when the going gets tough, try trimming it down. I've begun to catch after cutting a grain into quarters, they can be that finickity!!

I use a small bit of bread flake on the hook and simple bread crumb ground bait, used in small quantities, I mix it sloppy to create a cloud falling down around my float to the hook bait.
That should keep the perch off but be ready for the occasional tench too.

I would recommend very small cubes of luncheon meat (enough to cover a 16 hook) or very small sections of prawn, but both are favourites of Mr Tench also ! not so the Roach tho.

I tried prawns on my last visit to a small pool and they didn't reach the bottom before being grabbed by roach and rudd. Corn, tares, hemp or a fruity paste will deter perch but if there are hoards and they are hungry they can be a real pain and eat just about anything.

I used to catch crucian carp at my first fishing venue back in the mid 1960's using tiny pieces of fresh bread wrapped round a size 20 hook, like a piece of paste, with just the point of the hook exposed.
The bites were always finicky and the small float had to be shotted correctly so that just the tip showed above the surface. A bite would usually develop slowly with tiny movements of the float ending with it dipping right under.
There is no peace on earth like the peace of fishing in the early mornings

Casters are also very good & deter small perch due to their shell it seems.

What's cow paste?
Chance is always powerful. Let your hook be always cast; in the pool where you least expect it, there will be a fish
