Fishing Lodge for sale

Post by Deaf Cat »

The Times this morning says that Michael Collins is selling the Walton/Cotton fishing lodge.
It may only have one room and a fireplace but a shrine to the father of angling is on the market for £450,000.

The stone fishing lodge on the banks of the River Dove in Staffordshire was built at the spot where Izaak Walton, author of The Compleat Angler — the world’s most reprinted book after the complete works of Shakespeare and the Bible — and his friend Charles Cotton spent many hours fishing for trout.

The Beresford Fishery, a grade II listed building, comes with 33 acres of land and three miles of fishing rights. The owner, Michael Collins, 80, a retired businessman, decided to sell after taking a vote among his three children.

The initials of Walton and Cotton are entwined above the door of the folly, which was built in 1674, 21 years after the book was first published.

Cotton had inherited Beresford Hall, a quarter of a mile from the Dove, and the fishing lodge was “a place to shelter in and take a break and have a spot of lunch. You can imagine servants coming down from the main house with trays of meats and cheeses,” Mr Collins said.

He said that the techniques outlined by Walton in The Compleat Angler were still used today.

“He pretty much invented dry fly-fishing and mastered how to attract fish by laying an artificial fly on the surface of the water very gently — there is a great skill in doing this.”

If ever was the time to win the lottery, It would make an ideal head quarters for us TFF'ers.

God never did make a more calm, quiet, innocent recreation than angling.
