do tares need to be soaked and cooked as hemp,or do they just have to be lightly simmered?

I just boil mine up in a pan of water. Test them occasionally (dig in a thumb nail). They just need to be soft enough to nick with a hook. Some while back someone, I think it may have been Snape suggested putting bicarbonate of soda in. This does fizz a bit but it does seem to darken the colour,

I simmer mine with hemp in the same pan for 40 minutes with a lid on and then let cool with the lid on.

This is what I used to pass on to my customers...

Cooking Particles
pre-soak boil
Standard Hemp Seed over night Until it Splits
Big Hemp over night Until it Splits
Tares over night 20 minutes
Wheat over night 15 minutes
Mixed Seed Aniseed over night 20 minutes
Mixed Seed Standard over night 20 minutes
Garlic Feast 24 hours 30 minutes
Dark Seed Mix over night 20 minutes
Mini Tiger Nuts 24 hours 30 minutes
Standard Tiger Nuts 24 hours 30 minutes
Jumbo Tiger Nuts 24 hours 30 minutes
Maize 24 hours 30 minutes
Groats not necessary 5 minutes
Black Eyed Beans over night 25 minutes
Pinto Beans over night 25 minutes

Sorry the headings have gone out of sequence in the copy pasting. Each one simply has 2 columns Pre-soak and Boil time.

Very useful reference Shaun.

Being lazy I simply bring my hemp to the boil then lob it into a cool box overnight to stew, it comes out perfect every time. But tares are a little more difficult to time so nowadays I've usually got one of these in the garage for when needed

Make the most of them Dave. I'm pretty sure they're no longer available from Dynamite. :Brickwall:
