What about "Winkles" as Bait or can you even buy them anymore, always available when a child in the sixties, for sunday tea time.

Winkles!!! Uggh!!

Like you Jimmy, Sunday teatime, Late 60's and 70's for me. Mum and Dad taking the "lids" off and getting the winkles out with a pin.

I think you can still get them, i'll have to check the fish stalls in Romford market.

Sunday tea with my parents was always either Crab (fresh , prepared by dad), prawns, shrimps, cockles, winkles and sometimes whelks.

I love Crab, Prawns , Shrimps and Cockles, have never fancied Winkles and can't abide whelks.

As for winkles as a bait I would have thought they might be good, like shelled water snails.

Anyone ever tried them?

I wouldn't advice using them if they come in a jar full of vinegar as most fish seem put off by it. That said there's always one or two buck the trend. But fresh, like cockles there's no reason why they wouldn't catch.

I spotted some fat ones (oh-err missus) in a shop window in Paignton and had the same thought - good carp and tench bait? Yet to see them locally though, but I've a mind to try them when I do.

Wouldn't you have to soak them first in cold water to get rid of the salt.
Old fishermen never die they only smell that way.

The salt's probably as much of an attraction as the protein content!
