Hempseed and tares...
Hempseed and tares...
Came across these items whilst sorting the dog food out. Thought I'd use as addition to my bread based groundbait. Any special treatment needed.... Wouldn't want to give the little darlings stomach ache!
Thanks

Put them in a an old flask and fill it with boiling water. Put the lid on and leave overnight. In the morning you'll have cooked it to perfection.

I've been having some success loose feeding hemp this winter. I've not used any tares since summer.

Re: Hempseed and tares...
Hemp will attract fish in the winter especially barbel and chub. For roach fishing I'd use them in the summer.
Hemp can be prepared by soaking it for 12 hours+ then bring to the boil and put into a vacuum flask (leaving room for it to swell), or cool box for larger amounts. Hemp needs to be soaked then boiled until it is soft enough to take a hook. You only need a small amount of tares to hemp as they represent a large hemp seed when fished in conjunction.
Hemp should be fished little and often to keep roach interested and a grain of hemp (pushed into the split with the point still proud), or a tare fished through. Bites can be very fast! If bites slow up change to maggot or caster, this can switch it back on. Changing bait regularly is always worth a go.
I haven't fished hemp and tares for ages but I have enjoyed some great sport on the Bristol Avon and the Somerset Drains. You may find that on some waters the roach caught on maggot are small but on hemp, much bigger.

I'm not sure if you need to cook lt. As a bait yes, but as an addition to ground bait? No sweat. I'll stuff some in water in the mix and let it rest a while. A bit of softening will not go amiss..

If you don't cook it you can end up with some odd looking plants growing bankside. I've even found a 'tomato' plant on the gravel next to the Wye

Hemp MUST be soaked and boiled before use . Hookbait or feed it makes no difference.

Re: Hempseed and tares...
Fred Crouch used to just soak it overnight before fishing. I agree with you though Chris, it should be boiled.
