Maize or Sawdust? How do you get your maggots?

Post by MaggotDrowner »

I always get my maggots in maize because I always have since I was a boy. Also it's finer which for some reason I prefer. There is no real reason to it. How do you get yours and do you believe it makes an ounce of difference?

Dry if possible, if not I have them sieved in the shop, they stink more without bran and that catches me more tench!

:Hat: Years ago always added garam and tikka masala from the super market to my bran and maggots in Winter when feeder fishing , worked nicely for me . One was a yellow and one was a red colour I remember , nice and spicy . Kindest regards Woolly Bear . :Hat:

Saw dust because I read somewhere that they keep better. I don't have a fridge so have to keep them old school in a big white bucket to dissipate heat and moisture.

I don't have a fridge either. I have a bait freezer (full of sweetcorn, cheap bread, dead baits and prawns) but not a fridge. Mine live in the box and in summer I place the box into a tray of water and weigh them down with a brick on top. Seems to keep them a little longer.

I wonder why they would last longer in sawdust?

Maize meal for me and I keep them in my vintage metal bait tubs, they seem to keep longer and remain cooler in there.

Sawdust to clean them - then maize meal before fishing with them. Flavours excluded - just a drip or two of that - pineapple, strawberry, curry, etc.

Maize for me, they have been cleaned in sawdust in the shop before I buy them. Any leftovers go out in birdfeeder tray. Great to watch the scraps going on from my kitchen window.

I haven't used maggots for ages, but was given some after a special trip last winter. They were in maize, which was busy doing what it does so well: binding. I riddled off most of the grubs and crow-barred out the rest, rinsed them, and put them in slightly dampened bran, which is very cheap if bought in the sort of bulk I had, anticipating rather more bread'n'bran fishing than I actually managed.
They lasted well, at least a fortnight, in the salad drawer of the fridge.
